A nautical term of Guinea for hurricane.
Industry:Weather
The ability of the atmosphere to cleanse itself of terrestrial, often organic, emissions. The degradation of most organic compounds is an oxidation process initiated by attack by a hydroxyl radical. Thus, the ability of the atmosphere to sustain a concentration of OH sufficient to remove current levels of hydrocarbons, etc. , is usually referred to as its oxidizing capacity. The expression is qualitative, and no quantitative measure of oxidizing capacity has been adopted to date.
Industry:Weather
The mixing of a stratified body of water due to density changes, usually caused by temperature changes.
Industry:Weather
Substance capable of causing oxidation of, for example, an atmospheric species. The most common oxidant in the troposphere is ozone, which can be detected by its reaction with potassium iodide (KI). Thus, by extension, any species that oxidizes KI was historically classed as an atmospheric oxidant.
Industry:Weather
A domelike protrusion above a cumulonimbus anvil, representing the intrusion of an updraft through its equilibrium level (level of neutral buoyancy). It is usually a transient feature because the rising parcel's momentum acquired during its buoyant ascent carries it past the point where it is in equilibrium; the air within it rapidly becomes negatively buoyant and descends. Tall and persistent overshooting tops are frequently observed with strong or severe thunderstorms in which there is a nearly continuous stream of buoyant updrafts.
Industry:Weather
Water flowing over the ground surface toward a stream channel or water body. Upon reaching the channel or water body, it is called surface runoff.
Industry:Weather
The quantity that is delivered by an instrument or a component of an instrument; used in contradistinction to the input.
Industry:Weather
Water flowing over the ground surface toward a stream channel or water body. Upon reaching the channel or water body, it is called surface runoff.
Industry:Weather
The area common to two successive satellite images or scan swaths along the same or adjacent flight or orbital strips. The amount of overlap is expressed as a percentage of image area or scanned area.
Industry:Weather
A condition existing when an air mass aloft is in motion relative to another air mass of greater density at the surface. This term is usually applied in the case of warm air ascending the surface of a warm front or quasi-stationary front.
