Net radiometer designed to measure only solar radiation wavelengths.
Industry:Weather
Net radiometer designed to measure only thermal infrared wavelengths of electromagnetic radiation.
Industry:Weather
Net radiometer designed to measure both solar and thermal wavelengths of radiation as a single sum of energy.
Industry:Weather
The Arabic name for a northeasterly wind that occurs in winter on the Iranian coast of the Persian Gulf, especially near the entrance to the gulf and also on the Makran coast. It is probably of the bora type, though less strong, representing the outflow of cold air from central Asia. The n'aschi is part of the Asiatic monsoon system.
Industry:Weather
1. A general term for instruments designed to measure the amount of cloudiness. An early type consists of a convex hemispherical mirror mapped into six parts. The amount of cloud coverage on the mirror is noted by the observer. 2. Same as nephelometer.
Industry:Weather
The part of the gross primary production that remains after deducting the amount released by plant (autotrophic) respiration. It is the amount of energy that is stored in plant tissues and is often expressed as the amount of carbon or dry organic matter (biomass) produced over the time period.
Industry:Weather
1. A laboratory instrument for the production of clouds by the condensation process. 2. An instrument for demonstrating the temperature changes that occur in air that is rapidly expanded or compressed.
Industry:Weather
The mass balance at the end of the balance year. It represents the annual addition or loss of mass at a point on a glacier. See also average net balance.
Industry:Weather
A high-resolution region of discretization embedded within a low-resolution region of a numerical model or analysis system. Fine resolution may be desired to focus on a mesoscale feature such as a tropical cyclone or on a geographical area of interest. In two-way nested grids, information is passed back and forth between the high- and low-resolution regions, in contrast with one-way grids in which information is passed merely from low- to high-resolution regions. See grid telescoping, variable resolution model.
Industry:Weather
An instrument for determining the direction and relative speed of cloud motion. There are two basic designs of nephoscope: the direct-vision nephoscope and the mirror nephoscope.
