An organic compound, formula CH3Br, present in the atmosphere as the result of both natural (oceanic production) and anthropogenic (use as a soil fumigant) sources; this compound is the largest single source of bromine to the stratosphere, with a tropospheric mixing ratio of about 10 parts per trillion (by volume).
Industry:Weather
The most abundant single halocarbon, formula CH3Cl, found in the atmosphere, with a mixing ratio of about 600 parts per trillion (by volume) in the troposphere. This compound is mostly of natural origin, as a result of production in the oceans. It provides the natural background amount of chlorine that was believed to be present in the preindustrial stratosphere and that will likely be present in the future following the phaseout of other chlorine source compounds (chlorofluorocarbons, etc. ).

A chlorine-containing organic compound, formula CH3CCl3. It is used in industrial applications as a solvent and a degreasing agent. The production of this compound is now forbidden as a result of the Montreal Protocol. Because its sources to the atmosphere (anthropogenic activity) and its losses (mostly through reaction with the hydroxyl radical) are well understood, the atmospheric abundance of this compound has been used to infer the average hydroxyl concentration in the troposphere.
Industry:Weather
An organic compound, formula CH3I, present in the atmosphere as the result of its production in the oceans by marine algae. It is subject to rapid photolysis in the lower atmosphere (with a lifetime of a few days).
Industry:Weather
Unsaturated carbonyl compound, formula CH3C(O)CH=CH2, or 3-oxybutene. One of the major products of isoprene oxidation in the atmosphere.

The relatively saline water that flows out of the Mediterranean Sea through the Strait of Gibraltar in a subsurface layer just above the sill depth. The outflow consists mainly of Levantine Intermediate Water, which is formed in the extreme eastern basin of the Mediterranean. Once in the Atlantic, the relatively dense Mediterranean Water quickly sinks and spreads westward around a depth of 1000 m. The salinity anomaly of the Mediterranean Water can be detected several thousand kilometers west of the Strait of Gibraltar. See Mediterranean lenses, Gibraltar outflow water.
