A method of reducing the diameter of a wire or tube by drawing it through a series of progressively smaller dies without the wire or tube being heated.
Industry:Aviation
A method of refining petroleum products. In catalytic cracking, a catalyst is used to change high-boiling-point hydrocarbons into low-boiling-point hydrocarbons.
Industry:Aviation
A method of removing a very small amount of material from a metal surface by abrading the surface with a fine stone. Honing is used to produce a smooth finish on a surface, or to produce a sharp edge on a knife or chisel.
Industry:Aviation
A method of removing carbon and other contaminants from machine parts. In abrasive blasting, the parts are sprayed with a high-velocity blast of air containing fine particles of abrasive material such as sand, aluminum oxide, or glass beads.
Industry:Aviation
A method of removing grease and oil from a metal part by spraying it with hot vapors of a solvent such as trichlorethylene.
Industry:Aviation
A method of removing paint from an aircraft surface by dry-blasting it with tiny plastic beads.
Industry:Aviation
A method of removing some of the brittleness from a piece of steel being heat-treated. The steel part is heated red-hot and quenched in water, oil, or brine. A portion is then polished bright, and the part is reheated to a temperature indicated by the color of the oxide that forms on its surface. When the correct color of oxide forms, the heating is stopped, and the metal is again quenched.
Industry:Aviation
A method of repairing damaged compressor and turbine blades. The damage is removed and the area is cleaned out with a fine file to form a shallow depression with generous radii. The file marks are then removed with a fine abrasive stone so the surface of the repaired area will match the surface of the rest of the blade.
Industry:Aviation
A method of restoring the charge to a storage battery by connecting it across a source of direct current that can be maintained at a constant value by varying the voltage as the state of charge progresses. The ideal charging current is about 7% of the ampere-hour capacity of the battery.
Industry:Aviation
A method of securing a part in a recess in a metal surface. For example, a disk can be fastened in a counterbored hole by staking the edges of the hole. The disk is put into the hole, and a pointed staking tool is held near the edge of the hole and hit with a hammer. The staking tool forces metal from the edge of the hole over the disk to prevent its from coming out of the hole.
