Primitivne (nediferencirane) stanice koje imaju sposobnost postati razne vrste specijaliziranih vrsta stanica (npr. stanice srčanog mišića, živčane stanice, stanice gušterače). One su pluripotentne stanice koje nastaju iz unutarnje stanične mase blastocita. Embrijske matične stanice NISU embriji i ne mogu postati cjelovit organizam.
