A reduction in rate in the presence of a previously neutral stimulus which has characteristically preceded an aversive event. (E.g., a 3-minute tone which has repeatedly been followed by a strong shock will eventually suppress operant behavior in progress when the tone is introduced.) Sometimes equated with anxiety.
